I've tried going into the recovery console and doing fixmbr and fixboot, but nothing came of either of those. I have no problem formating and proceed with a clean installation of Windows XP as I have done it so many times before that I could do it with my eyes I am using the Microsoft XP CD that came with the computer.

How can i do what you said? If you had another computer you can get access to you can create a boot disk and put the latest bios for your motherboard on it.
