You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the ISO file). Finding the information on how to do this is rather difficult, and I’m not sure why.

I previously had a windows 7 home premium original copy which I did bought spending my money. Hopefully noone will try to charge me or get bank/card details from me this way. The Windows 10 upgrade does check for updates, but I would not count on that to apply the necessary updates prior to upgrading from one OS version to another. Beginning to wonder if this was a mistake and I should have downloaded afresh.
