It will shut down in low performance situations, and I can't seem to consistently reproduce the shutdown.

The fan should be moving quickly and smoothly. Is there any way to tell other than trying new ones of each? I have never had a CPU go bad so I'm not familiar with what happens when they do. Please refer to our CNET Forums policies for details.
It sounds like there is a power problem with either the board or the power supply. If not then possibly the motherboard. If your computer seems to be turning off when executing a certain program at specific times of the day, it could be infected. That works too, and actually a good solution!
