I then switched it on. Install the two famous updates and prayI believe the theory expressed above about some older font cache format may be correct, and probably microsoft didnt test compatibility with it...

The restore points come with a corresponding date they were created. Everything was fine on my PC last night, I haven't installed anything new recently, etc.
That worked for me...
